Chronic lung disease can make things that used to be easy very difficult. Things like getting the mail, climbing a flight of stairs, or keeping up with your kids or grandkids can seem overwhelming. If this sounds familiar, there’s good news. Our Pulmonary program can help you breathe easier, get stronger, and do more in your daily life. You’ll be surprised by how much you can still do!

Pulmonary Therapy is the medical art and science by which people disabled with lung disease may return to a more active and enjoyable life style. Pulmonary Therapy is designed to help you overcome your breathlessness and feel stronger and healthier. We now know that respiratory disease affects the muscles as well as the lungs. By training and strengthening these muscles we CAN improve your quality of life and your ability to exercise!

Our program is run by a team of medical professionals who are specially trained to treat people with lung disease. You will be given the individual one-on-one treatment you deserve, while our therapists teach you how to live and breathe better. You’ll learn breathing techniques to help you increase your lung capacity, exercises to increase strength and endurance, and you’ll learn tricks for conserving energy so you can do the things you want to do and live life to the FULLEST!

Our program is designed to improve several physical problems that arise as a result of advanced lung disease. The exercises you will learn specifically improve peripheral muscle weakness, and respiratory muscle weakness. Advance lung disease, itself, causes muscle protein breakdown. Additionally, the lack of muscle exercise, because lung function can’t support exercise (I’m too short of breath to exercise), causes muscle loss. A major focus of rehab is cardio-pulmonary conditioning. That is, “aerobic” exercises that improve endurance. Such exercises include walking, stationary cycling, etc. These exercises are often done while using oxygen. Our team will train you on when and how much oxygen to use when exercising.

In addition to exercise you will learn optimal breathing techniques such as “pursed lip and diaphragmatic breathing”. Occupational therapists will teach you about “energy conservation techniques”, and even physical equipment that can be used to extend and improve day to day function. Most program durations range from 6 to 18 weeks with a minimum of two to three sessions a week.

“When I first started I could not walk 20 feet without stopping to catch my breath. Now I can carry on a conversation while walking at the mall, I can perform my daily prayers, and my lower body has strengthened immensely to allow more stability and flexibility. Now when I am descending stairs I am not afraid of falling.” ~ Angela Eldam
